We will be leaving Edinburgh around 9 am and would like to arrive in Portree in the early evening. Which route is best and are there sight seeing stops along the way? My plan is to visit Stirling Castle, Doune Castle, and then head up Portee through Perth? If anyone has has a suggestions that would be great. Also, we are American and have never driven on the opposite side of the road before so an easy route would probably be best! Thanks!

I definitely wouldn’t go through Perth as you’ll be missing a very scenic part of the route. Firstly, do’t underestimate the distance you’ve got to go. The roads are very good but there’ll be heavy traffic in places and lots of the route is very bendy. I would suggest that you only do one castle – I’ve never been to either so can’t say definitively, but I do know that you’ll want maximum time to enjoy the scenery up to Portree. It sounds as if you might not start the scenic bit till quite late. My advice if you really want to do the castles is to start earlier from Edinburgh, aiming to finish your castle visits at about 11.00, 12 at the absolute latest. Then take the A84 to Crianlarich and then the A82 to Glencoe. The Pass of Glencoe is one of THE sights, site of the Campbell-MacDonald massacre and really wonderful to drive through (quite scary, it’s so high on both sides!). From there, straight on to Fort William, with plenty of shops etc, (though it’s often more interesting to eat at one of the pubs or hotels out of the towns). From there, up to Invergarry where you turn off to the A87 and on to Kyle of Lochalsh. You don’t say wen the trip will be – if it’s before the summer, the days will still be short and unless you start earlier even than I’ve said, you’ll be arriving in the dark.

Have a wonderful, wonderful time. (PS when you’re on Skye, the Flodigarry Hotel is good for morning coffee and great views. PPS don’t forget the midge cream)
