Coaches (buses) that travel between Fort William and Inverness (which is also where you can sometimes take the “Harry Potter” train) have to travel alongside Loch Ness for an hour or so, and there were a couple of stops when I took one. I believe it is fairly easy to book a Loch Ness tour that starts in Inverness.

But Inverness is a lovely place in and of itself. The Islands of Ness is a pleasant walk with many footbridges between the islands. When I walked it, I saw plenty of mallards, mergansers, even a great blue heron. And the Mustard Seed, right there on the riverfront, is one of the best restaurants in Britain!

Scottish Citylink operate regular buses between Inverness and Fort William … the route follows the full length of Loch Ness … there is no rail line down the Loch

if you’re going as a tourist there’s loads of coach trips on offer … here’s details of some of them http://www.scotland-inverness.co.uk/inverness-trips.htm … we did the day trip to the Orkney Isles when we were there, it was a long day but was well worth it
