@patsyd80 Mind your fucking manners, you haven’t a clue what you’re on about you ignorant dupe.

  • FreedomSaoirse:

That,s Robert Kee,whose television programme was called…Ireland a Television History which came on at 2or 3 o,clck on a Sunday…He based the programme on his book The Green Flag

  • jratt2:

This series was shown in Ireland and the UK in 1980. It was highly regarded at the time and remains a balanced account of Irish history.

  • jratt2:

    Fair enough.

It is true that some ex-British soldiers suffered discrimination when they came home, and some were shot as spies or murdered due to envy. However, some of these Irishmen actually joined the IRA also. In the years after Independence public (if unofficial) remembrance day commemorations were well attended, however this seems to have died out after WW2. National amnesia about the period set in when the troubles broke out in NI, but this is changing again with the peace process.

@jratt2 you make a good point and is def food for thought. I have just heard some horror storys of irishmen comming home from the hell of world war 1 an 2 to be hounded and abused for fighting for the british. This just upsets me so im sorry if i caused offence.

  • jratt2:

Far more Irishmen fought in WW1 than in the War of Independence. Perhaps that is what you should remember when thinking about people from the Republic, and wonder also how a people who contributed so much during WW1 could turn against the British so soon after.

The rebels of 1916 sought assistance from the Germans in WW1. In WW2 Ireland was a ‘pro-allied’ neutral, and those who sought assistance from the Germans were ruthlessly persecuted by the Free State government.

    @1971228 to hell or conought.

  • patsyd80:

Its a dissgrace the way the men who fought in ww1 were treated when they went back home to ireland by their fellow irishmen. Thats one thing thats allways in my mind when i think of people from the rep. dam low down rebels really are the lowest of the low. to say nothing of making deals with the Germans in BOTH wars.

It’s dated this versional history is very Anglocentric and colonial sounding even for the 197Os? Cromwell was a ‘Genghis Khan’ like figure considered a civil war tyrant in both England and Ireland being both anti royalist, Irish and catholic.Let’s see a more balanced history by now. There’s a surely reason this series was hiding away in Canada or the UK?

thanxs for uploading. i had to do an english project and i based my story on the 1641 rebellion

  • Tambov40:

I always wanted to see this! I own Robert Kee’s book ‘The Green Flag’ which was the basis for the TV series, although that books main focus is 1788 to 1923 (he covers early Irish history in about 40 pages.

Unfortunately, the sound of your video is poor. I can make out about 80% of what is being said, but place names and names are kind of difficult to make out.

Any chance you can get a new version of the video up with great audio so the viewers can hear what he is saying better?? Thanks

I remember watching this very interesting series in the 1970s. I’m glad to be able to see it again. Thanks for posting it.
