SUPPOSE to be free, God put it here for enjoyment, not gain.

The price of a gemstone depends on the ‘rarity’ of that stone and the size and quality-and then how much the jewelry store jacks up the price for uneducated buyers.
Garnets come in many colors-blood red, ruby red, orange, yellow…but the ‘birthstone’ is usually the blood red (darkest red) of all of them. Most ‘imitation’ garnets actually cost more than real garnets because it is not a rare stone.
Diamonds, some tourmalines, some aquamarines are the most expensive. Topaz (many times just a yellow sapphire-without expensive equipment you can’t tell them apart), sapphires are second most expensive.
Pearls are also used as a ‘birthstone’ but are not a stone.
Turqoise is used instead of blue topaz sometimes.
Gemstones are found all over the world but high concentrations of particular stones can be found in some places. Africa is the source of most of the world’s diamonds-yet several diamonds of more than one carat size have been found this year alone in the United States in a ‘public’ mining site.
Turgoise is predominately a native Indian stone from the Southwest-yet has been used in carvings in China for centuries.

Birthstones should be very expensive depending if their real and they have good quality. They should be found in mines and I’m not sure about any other birthstones but diamonds are quite rare and guess what diamonds are made of. OIL! Isn’t that amazing!? Plus diamonds take millions and millions of years to form. Here are all of the birthstones:

    January- Garnet
    Feburary-Amethyst
    March-Aquamarine
    April-Diamond
    May-Emerald
    June-Pearl
    July-Ruby
    August-Peridot < mine =)
    September-Sapphire
    October-Opal
    November-Citrine
    December-Blue Topaz
