lesson in english: history periods of the british-american drama
I may be taking a trip to Ireland and I need to know what the ex-change rate is.
How much might it cost to have health insurance ? And What are some companies that offer health insurance so you can take out a policy if you are a student studying in Scotland at a University there, with a Visa ?
In 1790, the English made up about 60% of the total US population, more than 70% of the European American population. The overwhelming majority of the Founding Fathers of the United States were English, including Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, John Adams, James Madison and Thomas Jefferson. In 2009, according to American Community Survey data, Americans reporting English ancestry made up only 9% of the total US population, and are only the third largest European group in the US, after Germans and Irish Americans. English Americans have lost their demographic dominance in the US. Why? There are two important reasons: 1. Nineteenth-century American intellectuals thought that immigrants to America would literally be assimilated to the English “race” (as Ralph Waldo Emerson put it). They believed that the English people could remain English even after absorbing other races and ethnic groups. These liberal intellectuals thought that immigrants of all strains would become Anglo-Saxons, they even believed that blacks would become white with more education. The basic problem was that these thinkers were Lamarckians – that is, they believed that people could inherit traits that their ancestors had acqired during their lifetimes. In the hands of Anglo-Saxon assimilationists, Lamarckism was part of the optimistic spirit of elite 19th-century liberal intellectuals who envisioned a future America to be people just like themselves, no matter what their origins. My Husband is from Ireland and I am from America. We want to move to Ireland. I am wondering what process I would need to follow to make it possible for me to live and work in Ireland?
I will hopefully get a high school diploma in USA this year. Which are the other entry requirements for EU students (i live in italy even though i’ll have an american high school diploma, not an italian one – can i be considered a EU student anyway?)?
Finally, how much do universities cost in UK/Ireland?
I want to bring my best friend with me when I travel to Ireland before starting my studies in England but am concerned for her safety. In the US she and I travel everywhere but I have heard there has been a rise in race crimes in Ireland and I don’t want us to be faced with ignorant hatred. Plus being two females traveling alone is already risky. Any insight on where the safe places of Ireland are and where we will not face any trouble would be greatly received.
I want to move to England or Scotland, but haven’t really gone about checking how, do we need visas or what. And also is England better than American.
I’ve got some friends from England coming to stay with me in the United States. I’d like to cook them some typically American meals, and since they’ll be at my house I’ll be cooking. The problem is, so much of American dishes are variations from existing European meals. I’ve been looking the differences up, but they seem to run together; except for obvious differences like Welsh rabbit, Irish stew ect.
Any suggestions on what I should cook? I’m a Northerner so I don’t cook much Cajun food or Southwest/Mexican dishes. The only spicy Cajun dish I cook is Cajun fettuccine alfredo.
I’ve came up with some potential dishes that tend to be more American or at least have a different take of the meal than in Europe. How do any of these sound?:
Barbecued ribs and mashed potatoes
Parmesan baked chicken
Chicken cordon bleu casserole (ham, chicken, cheddar and noodles)
Pot roast w/ potatoes and carrots
That Cajun fettuccine alfredo
Hamburgers and fries or baked potatoes
Not really cooking, but have the ingredients to make their own tacos
Peach or apple cobbler
Grasshopper pie! (mint ice cream pie)
Any of these sound American enough for you? Thanks for your help!
