1875 Antique Fine Art Irish Weaver Loom Spinning Wheel

Despite the exciting new designs of jewelry that are being churned out everyday by jewelers, vintage ornaments hold a special place in people’s hearts. Almost everyone has a family heirloom or two tucked away somewhere—beautiful bracelets, antique brooches, quaint necklaces and so on. There are specialty stores that cater to buyers of vintage jewelry exclusively. Even though these pieces are expensively priced, there’s no dearth of people who enjoy collecting these antique beauties.

Antique and vintage jewelry is available for women, men and children and encompasses a wide variety of articles and items, including rings, earrings, bracelets, historical brooches, etc.

Antique brooches are available in a variety of forms—costume brooches, antique pins, antique brooch clips, shawl clips, etc. Usually, an assortment of estate diamonds, classical sapphires, garnets, emeralds, different kinds of pearls and rubies are used in these vintage baubles. Beads and stones have also been used to produce beautiful brooches. Coral brooches were extremely popular in the Victorian Era and are still available as memorable collectibles. Jet-based brooches are not available in huge quantities these days but they were very popular in ancient times. Pinchbeck brooches are popular as the material has the capability to stay intact for a long period of time.

Collected ardently by antique jewelry collectors around the world, antique brooches are popular as they are easily wearable and never go out of fashion. They come in a variety of delicate colours and designs. The most common design used in brooches is that of a butterfly. Brooches look pretty and delicate and can go with any dress, be it a cocktail dress, a gown, a blazer or a sari. Ladies of any culture, country or continent can wear them. They can be worn to dances, parties and weddings. They can also be worn at formal occasions or ceremonial family gatherings.

How does one go about selecting ancient brooches while contemplating a purchase? Never mind if the antique brooch you like bears a few scratches as these can be easily fixed by the jewelry store itself. However, do not pick ones with chips, cracks or missing stones as they are difficult to repair and hence, useless. Discoloured brooches should also be avoided as they too cannot be easily repaired.

Metal Button 5/8 Celtic Knot Antique Silver By The Each

Going back in history 15000 years ago, man probably wore the first jewelry piece in Africa. It was made of bone. It took some more time till pendants made their presence. The earliest finding suggests that antique pendants go back to 300 BC. There is a colorful description of a ‘lavender resin pendant in an ornate marcasite setting with one crystal stone’, which possibly goes back to Hohokam town in Arizona in the year 300 BC when the town’s culture was that everyone wore different forms of jewelry in bone, turquoise and shell.

Historical pendants are now available off the shelf. There is this beautiful gold pendant from 324 AD during the reign of Constantine the Great! But that is not all. The Internet has made it possible to market antique pendants going back in time. There is therefore a 1675 French cross pendant, an 1877 Bishops Cross with coat of arms of Pope Pius IX, an 18th century Belgian golden diamond pendant from 1780 among others.

Considering that the Victorian jewelry period was during 1836-1901, Edwardian period was during 1901-1920, Art Deco during 1920-1935 and retro till 1950, the present day market is flush with historical pendants. You can pick up a precious rose cut diamonds cross pendant in 18 ct gold from the 1650s, an antique filigree locket pendant in 18 ct gold from the Victorian era or a Napoleon and Marie Louise remembrance pendant in 18 ct gold. You could order a beautiful Victorian medallion showing a figure with a winged helmet, probably Mercury, with a wreath of acorns and oak leaf in 18 ct gold among other antique pendants.

We have evolved from our ancestral days in our concept of pendants. The earliest pendants would have lacked the sophistication and the sheer beauty of today’s modern pendants. But, this evolution would have been due not only to technology, discovery of newer metals and alloys but the manner in which man has evolved culturally.

Whether it’s Russian jewelry, Egyptian jewelry, African jewelry or Viking jewelry; each piece of antique jewelry in is great demand throughout the world.

Both collectors as well as jewelry enthusiasts adorn historical jewelry because of the artistic grandeur it reflects. The Vikings made use of jewelry as money. Hence it was a common ritual among the Vikings to break the jewelry during financial pitfalls. Though Viking jewelry might appear to be a little chunky but its knotted patterns are in great demand at the global scale.

Antique brooches were used by the Vikings with several different type of clothing so as to enhance the appearance of that particular outfit. Antique earrings, brooches, bangles, bracelets, rings, etc have become the top preferences of millions of females throughout the world. Irrespective of the age, more and more women opt for antique brooches, rings, pins, bracelets, bangles, necklaces and several other pieces of antique jewelry for every occasion.

There are a variety of antique pins and brooches available in the market. Stones and beads are being widely used in order to produce the collectible and beautiful brooches. Victorian coral brooches are also very popular among the females of every age. Ivory brooches are exclusive pieces of historical jewelry and can be found only at renowned museum jewelry stores. Jet-based brooches are also very few in number and had a special place in ancient times. Next most popular are the Pinchbeck brooches, that are made from a durable material that remains intact for a long time.

These days, brooches come in all kinds of shapes and ancient designs. Butterfly brooches still enjoy the privilege of being the most eye-catching brooches in the world. One can also find some other fascinated shapes in brooches such as heart, shield, star, feathers and leaves. Some uniquely shaped brooches come in the shape of musical instruments such as violins and guitars. Whatever be your choice just make sure to collect these pieces only from a genuine and authentic dealer.

A chronological history of antique jewelry would take us back many years ago some 27,000 years to be more accurate, in Namibia. There man’s artistic expressions would have been carved into a piece of jewelry made from a dry piece of stick or the bone of a bird into an earring or a necklace. Such pieces of antique jewelry are rare to find because of the very nature of the material in use then like the pendant in bone from Tunisia some 15,000 years ago.

Egyptian jewelry would come much later around 4500 BC in the region of El-Badari from where antique earrings, crowns, girdles and brooches have been found made of silver and gold and their alloys with copper. The periods of the Pharaohs, Nefertiti, and Tutankhamun were the golden periods for antique jewelry.

Then came the period of the industrious and technologically savvy pre-Columbians around 4000 BC.  These were highly developed people who used copper and its various oxides and the lost wax process for making their jewelry. Some of the antique jewelry from the period is cast in brass plated with silver and then with 24 ct gold and then protected with a coat of lacquer! They had used platinum and there are exquisite antique earrings from this period.

Chinese jewelry is now 5000 years old. The ancient jewelry pieces have religious connections, some with a Buddhist background besides pagan symbols like the phoenix and the dragon. Complex and large size antique earrings have been found from this era in bronze, silver and gold.

Some of the other classic examples of antique jewelry go back to the Vikings from around 800 AD and the Russian, Victorian and French jewelry from the 17th century onwards. A few of the most attractive pieces of ancient museum earrings are the Sumerian Hoop Earrings in lapis and sterling silver from 2500 BC, classical Greek heart earrings with garnet and pearl in sterling silver from 450 BC and Celtic swirl earrings from around 500 BC. Equally impressive is a set of Faberge earrings, late 20th century and West African Crescent earrings in gilded sterling silver.

If you go back in time to Namibia some 27,000 years ago you will come to the birth of the human desire to appear attractive. In those days bird feathers and animal bones, seeds and dried sticks were used as pendants and earrings. Since most of these articles of jewelry were degradable not much can be seen today other than in cave drawings perhaps. But the prehistoric desire has not ebbed. From the time a girl achieves puberty or even earlier, her ears and nose are pierced. The wearing of earrings from an early age is still practiced in villages around the world. Antique earrings are therefore the commonest articles of personal jewelry found along with antique pendants. Egyptian jewelry among others has some beautiful samples of antique earrings in online shops.

Egyptian jewelry dates back to around 4500 BC during the time of El-Badari. Then came the golden age of Cleopatra, Nefertiti and the Pharaohs and the Greco Roman period when Egyptian jewelry flourished. The oldest among the antique jewelry from Egypt are probably the Fuluni Hoop earrings from the Sudan area or the Akuaba doll earrings worn as a symbol of fertility.

The ancient Egyptians were staunch believers of symbolism. This trait is reflected in virtually all ancient Egyptian jewelry. Gold was considered divine and symbolic of the sun god. Lapis lazuli was considered a sacred stone of celestial origin and symbolic of truth. The scarab beetle was widely used and symbolized rebirth. The carnelian was a stone that symbolized courage and great physical power. The blue lotus was symbolic of the god Nefertum of Memphis. He was the gold of perfume and the lotus that opened at dawn and closed at dusk was symbolic of divinity and eternal life.

When you go online you are amazed at the degree of care that has been taken to faithfully reproduce antique Egyptian jewelry especially earrings. You can buy a most attractive set of lotus petal and onyx earrings in sterling silver gilded with 22 ct gold or a set of Ankh earrings worn as an amulet said to possess unusual powers.
