Scottish cuisine refers to the precise set of cooking traditions and practices related to Scotland. It has certain special characteristics and is loved by food buffs across the globe. Cuisine of Scotland has evolved through the long standing history of the country and has come to comprise an important dimension of its culture. Scottish cuisine is renowned for the widespread use of local produce.
Whilst there are many healthy options available on the Scottish menu, there are also many popular, often cheaper dishes, which aren’t so healthy. These are often seen on the tables of lower income families. Such dishes, whilst quite tasty, are very basic and use cheaper ingredients (fatty meats) and often contain little in the way of vegetables.
Haggis is perhaps the most popular traditional Scottish cuisine that is indeed a delicacy for the Scots. It is made from sheep’s offal (pluck) which is chopped finely, mixed with toasted oatmeal then sewn into the sheep’s stomach lining and boiled for a further three hours. Fish constitutes yet another staple diet for the Scots. Scottish salmon is among the finest produced in the world.
Soups are very popular in Scotland and are savored by almost everyone. The ingredients are fresh and natural and the soups can be served both hot or cold. Bonfire Warmer Soup made with carrots, onions, bacon, butter, milk and chicken stock. Cullen skink (Finnan haddock and potato soup) comes form a small town on the Moray Firth coast called Cullen.
Scotland, and the west coast in particular, is infamous for the amount of deep-fried food consumed, and for being the home of such dishes as the deep-fried pizza and deep fried Mars bar. Deep fried doner kebabs have also become quite popular in Glasgow.
