www.ticketsatthegrand.org Jake Shimabukuru, who performed at the baby grand in March, has been called the Jimi Hendrix of ukulele. Thats right, ukelele. Like many Hawaiians, he took up Ukulele early in life, at age 4, and he stuck with it. He was also a drummer in his high school marching band and has studied piano. He says both have influenced his playing style. He came to international prominence after a video of him performing a Beatles song hit Youtube. Hes appeared twice on late Night with Conan OBrian, and his career has also led to some hi-profile collaborations. He recently scored a film, and hopes that leads to other opportunities to expand his career. Here are some other shows coming up at The Grand and baby grand. Grammy award-winning singer Kathy Mattea will perform with her acoustic band on April 19th for her Moving Mountans tour. Shes promoting her latest album Coal. Another Grammy winner, Tom Chapin, has been called the pied piper of childrens music. Hell play from his latest family recording, Some Assembly required, at the Grand on April 26th. Fiddler Natalie McMaster has played with the likes of Alison Krauss, the Chieftains, Paul Simon, and Pavarotti. She returns to the grand for a solo performance on May 2nd. The Grand rounds out its spring season with a performance by the Extraordinary trumpeter Chris Botti on May 13th. Bottis latest release is a suite of songs and music inspired by the romance of Italy.
The English Shakespeare Company adapted the three Henry VI plays to Henry VI “House of Lancaster”, and Henry VI “House of York”. “The Wars of the Roses” (English Shakespeare Company, UK, 1990) is a direct filming, from the stage, of Michael Bogdanov and Michael Pennington’s 7-play sequence based on Shakespeare’s history plays. Paul Brennen as Henry VI June Watson as Margaret All performances were recorded at the Swansea Theatre. from blurb on videotape: Shakespeare’s history cycle recounts the story of two great dynasties, the Red Rose of Lancaster and the White Rose of York, who contested their rights to the crown across nearly two centuries of murder, intrigue, rebellion, counter-rebellion, and bloody battle culmination at last in the Battle of Bosworth and the accession of Henry Tudor to the throne. The great battles of Agincourt, Tewkesbury, and Bosworth; the poetry of love, the treachery of power politics, and the unease of crownèd heads–in short, Shakespeare’s history plays–are here presented by the English Shakespeare Company in performances hailed for bringing to life the history as well as the plays.
