I’m interested in understanding why some non-Welsh speakers have such animosity towards the Welsh language.
I can understand why adults don’t to learn, because it takes too much time etc. That’s down to personal choice. And also, I don’t agree with non-Welsh speakers being discriminated against for not being able to speak Welsh, because it’s not their fault they didn’t have a Welsh medium education.
I also think that there’s no point in sending kids to a Welsh medium school, if neither parent can speak Welsh. Because the parents won’t be able to understand the kids homework, and it could damage the child’s education.
But I don’t see the harm in kids learning Welsh as a second language. Education is about giving children choices and opporutnuities. I can think of many lessons I hated in school, and cannot remember a single thing I leaned. But I’m glad I had the opportunity to explore these subjects, and certainly never saw them as pointless. And I was able to decide for myself if I wanted to carry on and do A-levels etc.
It breaks my heart when I think of all those little children who were punished for speaking Welsh, with the Welsh Not, and being beaten at the end of the school day. And I can’t understand why some Welsh people carry on that attitude the prejudice towards the language in their own country. People just want to reclaim what was taken away from Wales by the British Government, after the ‘Treachary of the Blue Books’ inquiry.
If the Welsh language dies, Wales will be no different from England. Nothing against the English, but Wales is it’s own country with different history, culture, literature etc.
There are many Welsh soceities around the world, who study and admire our culture, language, music, poetry. People from all over the world study The Mabinogi, the Gododdin, the Welsh Triads, Celtic history, Old Welsh. Why isn’t there the same respect and pride in Wales? Is it shame? Not wanting to be seen as ‘backwards’?
I’m not attacking non-Welsh speakers, I recognise that Wales is a bilingual country. I just want to understand the hatred towards the Welsh language. I hate the way the language it splitting the country, and there really needs to be more understanding from both sides.
Please no abuse, this is a serious question.
My great-great grandmother was a British princess and lived in a castle. ![]()
For people without a sense a humour, this question is play on the old, “How much Indian are you?” and the common, “my great-great grandmother was a cherokee princess and lived in a tipi”
I am a Sri Lankan student reading for masters in Ireland. I am planning to bring my wife here for 3 months on a visit/tourist visa. I would be very much grateful to you if you can give me a rough estimate of the amount that we have to show in (either my or her) bank account statements in order to obtain visa? A rough estimate would suffice with a little explanation if possible. Thank you.
The Irish famine was caused by the failing of the potato crop. But of course there had to be other foods in Ireland at the time. We did not just live on Potatoes alone.
Why did the failure of the potato crop have such a devasting effect on the Irish, when there were other foods to be eaten
No Jules. We didn’t just live on Potatoes
Actually, Most people didn’t sell their crops for rent, as Potatoes were bulky and expensive to transport, so people usually ate what they grew themselves
I’m traveling Ireland with a couple buddies and one of em wants to go visit all the castles, go hiking, and some other out door stuff. But my concern is can you really do much outdoors if the weather is not in your favor? What scenic places can you see in November when the weather’s crap? What can are some touristy things we can do?
10 points for the best answer. Thanks!
