The history of rock & roll in Ireland is presented in suitably lively fashion in a series produced by RTÉ, Ireland’s national television network. In these first three installments from the series (each an hour long), the story advances from the 1950s to the early 1980s, with archival footage providing a glimpse of what all the excitement was about. The first stirrings of rock music in Ireland took the form of “show bands,” hugely popular ensembles that gave many young … More >>

From a Whisper to a Scream – The Living History of Irish Rock

Barry Island ROck was a documentary filmed in Barry, South Wales. It featured four Barry bands, More Than Passion, No One, The Missing and The Kick Inside. Under the music workshop that was part of The Vale Activity centre, a number of music projects were developed. Working with Valley and Vale Community Arts using all of their video equipment this video was one of the most ambitious. Each band got to help the other bands make their own video for a song. They also helped filming the footage to flesh out the documentary. The resulting footage was then edited by Dave Morse, Joe Parratt and Valley and Valeinto the final documentary (or Rockumentary as it became known). Although most of the musicians involved have continued to make music, albeit it for fun, or for some very much still in the same spirit as back in 1985. Sadly none of the bands went on to achieve wider acclaim. A symptom most definitely of the lack of interest in music from the area that existed back then. Thankfully times have changed dramatically since. To quote the video liner notes: Barry Island Rock – The first ever Rock Documentary video produced by local bands in Barry. Part of a living archive for Barry This project brought together four groups to produce not only a promotional video for each band, but also a document of the social and economic factors which have affected both the town and in turn those who are trying to make a go of producing their own music in it.

Does anyone know of any bands wich blend celtic/medieval music with rock music? I managed to find myself a celtic metal band, Eluveitie, wich sound very celtic but sadly they growl wich I don’t like. Maybe something you hear in movies like Lord of the Rings with powerful electric guitars backing? Please suggest something
Thanks

I’m looking for a good folk punk/Celtic rock song that has a fast tempo and is really good.

Anyone know the name of it? It never plays for very long but sounds pretty cool.

I’m an avid fan of Celtic music, although I seldom ever (whether in this genre or others) follow an artist or group fanatically – usually I only like one or two songs by them. I’ve listened to some more ambient Celtic stuff but recently have taken an interest in more lively Celtic rock. So can anybody suggest me some particularly noteworthy songs/bands that work in this genre?

To be pickier still, I’m not particularly big on the heavy metal, nor the delicate harp/lullaby esque stuff. I like pieces that are lively, remeniscent of the folk of Scotland and Ireland. Although I classify it as “Celtic rock”, I am particularly fond of pianos and strings. Something with a nice strong rhythm, meditative, but very folklike without being too fairytale-esque. At the same time, nothing too heavy.

I’m rambling at this point. I know no two songs are alike, but I’m basically looking for some songs as described above. An example of a pseudo-Celtic rock song I’ve been quite fond of lately is, well, “Celtic Rock” by Donovan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQaSMgqgH1o

I’m not too big on the sound distortions, but this is basically the kind of hardiness I want in a Celtic song.
Nice suggestions thus far, although I’d still like to find a group that is a bit less dense with the instruments while still having a nice rhythm. Ideas?

I had never really thought much about this kind of music until now, but I found I liked the song Shipping Up to Boston by the Dropkick Murphys. So now I’m looking for similar music I might like…suggestions?
