King Lorcán/Queen Arela (Baheera) Sort of an AU crossover between Star Wars and English History. In the Kingdom of Inglataria lived the selfish and murderous Prince Lorcán. When he was just a child he spotted a commoner by the name of Baheera who was a bit older than him. He thought her an angel. He knew at that moment he wanted to marry her, but his father and grandmother forbade it, going so far as to send Baheera away to a neighboring kingdom to keep Prince Lorcán’s mind off of her. When Lorcán’s father died and he became King, he sent for Baheera. He still remembered her as his angel, and that’s what he called her. He renamed her Arela. He kept Arela at his side, constantly asking her to be with him and to marry him. When she was alone, he was ceaselessly invading her thoughts with his own, telling her to choose. He told her that he had certain powers that would keep her young and beautiful forever. But whenever Arela heard the word “forever” out of King Lorcán’s mouth, all she could ever see was her own death. After weeks of Lorcán’s persistence and despite being terrified of him, she still felt an attraction to him, so Arela finally gave in and married him, knowing she could not say no if she had truly wanted to. After years of happiness King Lorcán decided he no longer wants Queen Arela at his side, and Arela was horrified to find that every horrible thing she had imagined of Lorcán was true, and as she died, Arela remembered that the last time she saw Lorcán, he

Thisvideo no longer plays correctly. I will upload it again as soon as I can. This is one of the songs I remember from my childhood, as my parents had a ten inch LP of Irish songs sung by Father Sydney McEwan. This was one that struck me right from the start as a fascinating song. It is unusual in its complex rhyme scheme, and some of the words are a bit of a tongue-twister. The tune of this ballad, known as “Gilderoy” has been used for many songs, including “Led By the Spirit”, “Come All Ye Worthy Christian Men”, “Dives and Lazarus (Child 56)”, “The Unquiet Grave (Child 78) and “The Murder of Maria Marten.” The song has been recorded by many artists, including John McEwan, The Pogues, The Chieftains, Béla Fleck, Yo-Yo Ma,The King’s Singers, Slainte, The Irish Rovers, The Wolfe Tones and the Serbian group, Orthodox Celts. You can see a playlist of my Irish songs here: www.youtube.com For lyrics and chords of my songs please see my website: www.raymondcrooke.com
