The haunting story of the beautiful—and tragic—Mary, Queen of Scots, as only legendary novelist Jean Plaidy could write it

Mary Stuart became Queen of Scotland at the tender age of six days old. Her French-born mother, the Queen Regent, knew immediately that the infant queen would be a vulnerable pawn in the power struggle between Scotland’s clans and nobles. So Mary was sent away from the land of her birth and raised in the sophisticated and gli… More >>

Unlike nearly all of their Brit Invasion brethren, there never was a Them reunion. For at least a couple of good reasons: Lead vocalist Van Morrison’s fame as a solo artist quickly transcended the acclaim he earned as a bandleader. Then, too, Them didn’t really have a solid, identifiable lineup to reanimate. The ever-in-flux Belfast-based ensemble nevertheless ranks with the Animals and the Rolling Stones as fine purveyors of bullish, non-American ’60s rhythm and blues. The … More >>

In the 1950s, Colin MacFarlane was born in the Gorbals, a working-class neighborhood in Glasgow, Scotland. MacFarlane witnessed the last days of the old Gorbals just as a major regeneration program began in 1961 and, as a street boy, he had a unique insight into a once great community in rapid decline. He witnessed numerous drunken fights, gang battles, police corruption, and even the occasional murder. But the Gorbals had another side, one where ordinary, hard-work… More >>

Over the summer I was assigned a project. I have to write a ‘novel’ on irish/scottish folklore and chose to write a story about a changeling child that grows up as a mortal in 17th/18th century Scotland or Ireland. She finds out she’s a fairy child when her brother comes from the fairy world and kidnaps her…or something like that. If someone has a better idea please tell me! The thing is I can’t find a way to begin the ‘novel’. Any ideas???

Claire Roche performing in song “The Story Of Wandering Aengus”, a poem by WBYeats, at the Methodist Church Sligo, part of the Yeats Festival 2009. I went out to the hazel wood, Because a fire was in my head, And cut and peeled a hazel wand, And hooked a berry to a thread; And when white moths were on the wing, And moth-like stars were flickering out, I dropped the berry in a stream And caught a little silver trout. When I had laid it on the floor I went to blow the fire a-flame, But something rustled on the floor, And someone called me by my name: It had become a glimmering girl With apple blossom in her hair Who called me by my name and ran And faded through the brightening air. Though I am old with wandering Through hollow lands and hilly lands, I will find out where she has gone, And kiss her lips and take her hands; And walk among long dappled grass, And pluck till time and times are done, The silver apples of the moon, The golden apples of the sun.
