Try “Dubliners” by James Joyce…it’s a moral history of Ireland.

Strumpet City – a semi/fictional story of Dublin in the early 1900′s – is a brilliant piece of writing. You can actually smell Dublin and the river Liffey. The characters (Rashers Tierney was my favourite) come to life off the pages. As a matter of fact, I am going to dig it out again after all those years and start reading it again tonight. Thanks for the question. Written over a long period by James Plunkett.

Kindling the Celtic Spirit by Mara Feedman is a great book that gives examples of lifestyles in the ancient Celtic world.

I like 1916 by Morgan Llewellyn, a novel of the Irish Rebellion. Also, The Great Shame: and The Triumph of the Irish in the English-Speaking World by Thomas Keneally.
