I have lived in all corners of the UK and Ireland…in the course of living in these areas i had the chance to sample the local cuisine….and noted that we have a phenomenon going on when it comes to fried breakfasts in the British Isles.
Scotland:Full Scottish breakfast,square sausage,ayrshire bacon,black pudding,potatoe scone,fried egg,fruit pudding,fried tomatoe,mushrooms,fried bread,link sausage,tea/coffee toast.
England:Full English breakfast,sausages,fried egg,baked beans,bacon,fried bread,tea/coffee,toast.
Ireland: Full Irish breakfast,pork sausages,rashers,pudding,black pudding,fried egg,fried bread,wheaten brown bread and irish butter,tea,coffee,toast.
Northern Ireland: Ulster fry,soda bread,pork sausages,fried egg,pudding,black pudding,rashers,tea/coffee/toast.
unfortunately when i was in Wales(i never lived there), but when i was there i was offered a full English in two seperate places…i was saddened by this and perhaps there is a Welsh breakfast consiing of lava breads etc???.. so what in your opinion and experience is the best of the breakfasts????

Well, the key thing about a Full English is the variety within it. Ultimately it’s personal preference.
I will not eat black pudding on any account (just answered a question similar) and these days we are health freaks so a lot of things which made up the traditional breakfast are now not chosen e.g. fried bread.
So, for instance, I will have 2 grilled rashers of back bacon, a fried egg on dry toast, tinned tomatoes and brown sauce. If I eat sausages they will be the low fat variety. I like mushrooms too -but would never fry them as they soak up so much fat.
I love the way Americans serve a Full English (very streaky bacon, flipped over fried eggs) and fried potatoes. What I can’t stand is the way they they put pancakes and syrup on the same plate. Ugh!!!
I’ve aquired a real liking for toast and grape jelly (instead of marmalade) – but on a separate plate! I think Eggs Benedict are truly the most disgusting thing ever invented -but that’s just me.
Also very popular as part of an English breakfast was kedgeree – a rice and smoked fish dish (from our colonial days in India). It sounds disgusting but is truly delicious. Marks & Sparks used to do a ready made version which was to die for.

I love porridge too- served with a splash of cream and golden syrup – In Scotland it is made with water and salt.
This has largely been replaced with meusli and blueberries these days…
Edit@ Skywise – I once saw a programme about making black pudding -in walks this man with a large vat of congealing, really dark pigs blood- that was it for me. You are absolutely correct- all the animal should be eaten -but I cannot touch the “blood and guts” i.e. offal – I’ll donate my portion to Pedigree Chum.

You’re absolutely right about there being a Welsh breakfast which generally consists of fried bacon, eggs, sausages mushroom, black pudding and fried lavabread and cockles (fried in the bacon fat – heaven!!!)
The best breakfast I’ve ever eaten is served in a place called Fink’s Diner which attached to M&P’s motorcycle shop in Gorseinon near Llanelli – absolutely to die for.
To reply to the answerer from before – what have you got against black pudding? I just don’t get it. I mean, if you’re happy to eat meat then what does it matter what form the meat takes? An animal has still died for your sustenance so do it some respect and eat the whole animal, not just a small part of it.
